Not to be over dramatic, but I’ll never forget where I was the day Nirvana died.
It was my freshman year in college. I was hanging around in my dorm room watching MTV (remember when they played videos?) when Kurt Loder came on to break the news. The halls became alternately loud and quiet with people as they discovered the news and rushed to TV’s to find out more.
Months later, we heard rumors that Dave Grohl was working on a new project, and that he was no longer “just a drummer”. With the internet still in its infancy, details were scarce, and it was many more months before the Foo Fighters were unleashed upon the world. We quickly learned that while they looked like a band, the first album was done entirely by Dave Grohl. Every instrument was played by him, recorded individually, and then merged together afterward.
The sound was vaguely reminiscent of Nirvana, but entirely different. In the 20 years since Nirvana passed away, the Foo Fighters have become one of the biggest rock groups in the world, equaling (and perhaps eclipsing) the accomplishments of Nirvana. Few would have expected this kind of success 20 years ago.
I actually think about Dave Grohl a lot. I don’t know much about his dreams or desires during his time in Nirvana. Whether he always thought of himself as a “front man” or if he was just happy being behind the drum kit. Were visions of Foo Fighters always dancing in his head?
These unanswered questions are more interesting to me than the actual answers. They’re interesting because I can apply them to my own life.
“Am I being complacent in my life?”
“Is there more I can/should be doing?”
“How can I use this seemingly bad situation as an opportunity to make a good situation?”
Nothing was handed to Dave. His success is the result of a ton of hard work and a passion for music. That first album was accomplished because he decided to make it happen, regardless of the amount of work involved. Few would have even attempted it. Few have had his success.
“Am I stuck behind the lead singer when I should be leading?”
“Am I doing EVERYTHING I can to make my dreams a reality?”
“Am I a Foo Fighter?”
