Red Baron vs. The World

unsteady, untried,
the child inside me flies
Red Baron vs. The World

then over my shoulder, a whisper
she appealed to my older self
the one who grew up, the one who
know’s where it’s at and what’s what

when the Baron blew the world to pieces
it was all in my head,
she said.

if you really want to rule the world
you can’t smile. You know Oz.
Thicken up, get real.
We’re halfway dead and God croaked first.

I got up and left.
She’s not worth
Ditching the Baron on account of the hearse.
