My favorite magic trick

Wince though I may:

I (eventually) appreciate
each excruciating reminder
that not everyone likes me.

That there are others
more brilliant,
more talented,
more creative,
more capable.

That I am
biased and broken and blameworthy,
and sometimes
bigheaded, pigheaded, and worse.

That I am good at being wrong.
Ahem.
That I am great at being wrong.

That I am, in fact, quite extraordinarily small.

For I’ve only ever found
strength in my weakness,
joy in spite of pain.

Yes! That’s no mere platitude:

I’ve only ever found
strength in my weakness,
joy in spite of pain.

And to know that
regardless
of my flaws and failings
I am loved and
I am forgiven
by those I hold dear?

Wow. I’ll tellya:

That’s magic that can turn each wince to peace.

Thank you for laying yourself before us, open and vulnerable. There is a quality to your humility that has always made you seem very approachable (to me, anyway). I just really appreciate you.
